In recent years, Turkey’s coastal regions have experienced a marked increase in the frequency and severity of wildfires, a trend closely associated with the intensification of hot and dry summer conditions.

MASSIVE FIRES IN IZMIR

Between June 24 and 26, 2025, the province of Izmir in western Turkey experienced a series of eight large-scale forest fires, marking one of the most severe wildfire events in the region’s recent history. The initial outbreak occurred in the district of Çeşme, where the fire rapidly spread and posed a significant threat to adjacent residential areas.

Current State of Forest Fires in Turkey

Currently, forest fires are ongoing at five different locations across the Turkish provinces of Eskişehir, Sakarya, Bilecik, Karabük, and Manisa. The situation remains critical, and firefighting efforts are continuing in these regions.

Wildfire in Canakkale

Wilfires that started in Canakkele on August 8, 2025, have forced thousands to flee, many homes and cars have been burnt down to ashes. Both Canakkale airport and the Dardanelles Strait, which connects the Aegean Sea to the Sea of Marmara, were temporarily shut due to wildfires on August 11. Guzelyali district was totally charred and many have been left homeless..
